SINI-STYLE CALLIGRAPHY, CHINA, 20TH CENTURY. - Lot 89
SINI-STYLE CALLIGRAPHY, CHINA, 20TH CENTURY. Ink on paper. Signed with an illegible zhuanshu seal. Inscribed with the sacred Basmala formula (Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim— “In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful”), written in black ink on paper mounted on a beige silk scroll. In a tube. (Stains, tears). Dimensions: 116 x 67 cm. This calligraphy features Arabic letters that stretch vertically to adopt the classical format of Chinese hanging scrolls (kakemono or ghubbar), perfectly blending Islamic aesthetics and spirituality with the material structure of Sino-Oriental art. Sini calligraphy is a distinct form of Arabic calligraphy that developed under the influence of Chinese calligraphic traditions. Its name derives from the Arabic term “sini,” meaning “China.” This style is distinguished by its supple, rounded forms, elegant lines, and fine tips. It is used in particular to reproduce religious texts. Sini calligraphy appears on various types of media: manuscripts, works of art, inscriptions carved or engraved on wood and stone in mosques, as well as on decorative objects such as ceramics and metal pieces. Cabinet Portier: Alice Jossaume, SFEP Expert.
