A COLLECTION BY MUHAMMAD B. SULAYMĀN AL-JAZŪLĪ (d. 1465 A.D. - Lot 81
A COLLECTION BY MUHAMMAD B. SULAYMĀN AL-JAZŪLĪ (d. 1465 A.D.): DALĀ’IL AL-KHAYRĀT, INCLUDING THE ṢALĀT AL-MASHSHĪSH BY ‘ABD AL-SALĀM IBN MASHSHĪSH (d. 1228) AND A TREATISE ON MAGIC, WEST AFRICA, PROBABLY IVORY COAST, 19TH CENTURY. A devotional manuscript in Arabic on laid paper, consisting of 188 loose square-shaped folios, copied in brown ink with polychrome highlights in red, blue, and yellow. The script, of the Sūdānī type, appears particularly neat in the text of the *Dalā’il al-Khayrāt*, while it becomes more cursive in the following sections. Vocalization is highlighted in red. The textual divisions (wird and ḥizb) are introduced by polychrome geometric cartouches, extended into the margins by decorative medallions. The text of the *Dalā’il al-Khayrāt* begins with the Names of Muhammad, continues with the *Faṣl al-Kayfiyya*, and concludes with a colophon mentioning the name of the scribe, Muḥammad Qarnak b. Mūd Muḥammad Ṣāliḥ, as well as that of its owner, Maḥmūd b. Mūd Ibrāhīm. A second colophon, placed at the end of the Ṣalāt al-Mashshīsh, gives the name of another scribe: Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad Ṣāliḥ b. Ibrāhīm b. Sulaymān. The treatise on magic concludes with a colophon mentioning the title *Kitab al-shifa*, the scribe Ibrāhīm Kunda, and the owner Maḥmūd Dithrah. Brown leather flap binding with stamped geometric patterns and rosettes, accompanied by its matching box and carrying pouch, also in brown leather; the braided handles of the latter are now broken and partially missing. Condition Report: Manuscript partially collated. The folios are not in order. The beginning of *Dalā’il al-Khayrāt* is missing. Generally in good condition. Manuscript dimensions: 10.5 x 10.5 cm Box dimensions: 14.4 x 12 cm. Provenance: Former private collection in Paris, prior to 1978. Passed down through the family to the current owner. The manuscript is distinguished by the abundance and quality of its iconographic program. In addition to depictions of the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina—showing the tombs of the Prophet, Abū Bakr, and ʿUmar, the miḥrāb, and the minbar, and the sacred garden—it includes schematic views of the sanctuaries of Mecca and Jerusalem (Bayt al-Maqdis). These are complemented by symbolic depictions of the Prophet’s sandals, his ‘anazah, Mount Qāf, mentioned in Islamic tradition, and Mount ʿArafa, represented by Umm Salama’s oratory and her mosque built atop the mountain in medieval times (see Ibn Jubayr and Ibn Battuta), as well as a cruciform motif symbolizing the Prophet’s tomb, surrounded by the names of the Four Rightly Guided Caliphs and the four angels. The Ṣalāt al-Mashshīsh is preceded by a circular composition evoking waves, a rare feature in this type of manuscript. The richness of the iconographic program, the calligraphic style, and the specific features of the text and binding bring this manuscript close to the BnF copy, Arabe 6869, dating from the 19th century and originating from Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
