ART DECO EARTHENWARE VASE, BY THE ABDERRAZAK BROTHERS, NABEU - Lot 154
ART DECO EARTHENWARE VASE, BY THE ABDERRAZAK BROTHERS, NABEUL, TUNISIA, CIRCA 1930. Glazed decoration in blue, yellow, and green on a white background, featuring an antique-style handle and spout, resting on a domed base. The body is adorned with large, multi-lobed medallions. Condition: The base is fractured and has been re-glued; it has holes, likely traces of a former lamp fixture. Height: 28 cm. From the early 20th century onward, the Abderrazak family established itself as one of the leading figures in Tunisian arts and crafts. Around 1910, the Abderrazak brothers created remarkable pieces at the prestigious Chemla workshop, known as “El Qallaline,” in Nabeul. Their work reflects a remarkable dialogue between tradition and creativity: it draws inspiration from the ornamental repertoires of 18th- and 19th-century Tunisian artists, while reconnecting with the heritage of antiquity through motifs borrowed in particular from the famous Carthaginian mosaics. These works thus illustrate the richness of a craft that combines heritage, technical mastery, and aesthetic innovation.
