LION-DECORATED PLATE MADE OF QALLALINE EARTHENWARE, TUNISIA. - Lot 153
LION-DECORATED PLATE MADE OF QALLALINE EARTHENWARE, TUNISIA. 18TH CENTURY. Decor painted in ochre, blue-gray, and green on a cream-beige background, adorned in the center with a stylized lion surmounted by a flowering shrub motif; the rim features a herringbone pattern punctuated with dots. Chips and missing pieces. Height: 12 cm. Diameter: 32.5 cm. “Qallaline” is the plural of “Qallal,” which refers to a potter or ceramist. Qallaline earthenware, which enjoyed its golden age in the 17th and 18th centuries, emerged from the convergence of several cultures in Ottoman Tunis. Its rise is deeply linked to the arrival of Morisco artisans expelled from Spain in the early 17th century. Settling in the potters’ quarter north of the Tunis medina, they fused the techniques of Andalusian majolica, the Ottoman floral repertoire (inspired by Iznik), and traditional Maghreb symbols, such as the lion or the bird. Bibliography: Loviconi, Alain, and Dalila Loviconi. *The Earthenware of Tunisia: Qallaline and Nabeul*, Édisud / Cères / Institut du monde arabe, 1994.
