EARTHENWARE PLATE FROM THE CHEMLA WORKSHOPS, IZNIK-STYLE DEC - Lot 152
EARTHENWARE PLATE FROM THE CHEMLA WORKSHOPS, IZNIK-STYLE DECOR, DEDICATED TO DR. MIGNOT, SIGNED "AWLÂD CHEMLA, TUNIS," EARLY 20TH CENTURY. Flat in shape, with a small rim, resting on a ring-shaped base, glazed in blue, yellow, and green, decorated with a peacock or a crane surrounded by stylized flowering stems, the whole encircled by a chevron-patterned band. Dedicated on the reverse and signed. Height: 5 cm. Diameter: 24.5 cm. Inscription on the reverse: “Awlâd Chemla, Tunis, To Dr. Mignot. The Chemla Family. Gratefully,” accompanied by a small fish (a symbol of good fortune). A 16th-century Iznik plate with a decoration identical to that of our plate is housed at the National Museum of the Renaissance (E.Cl.8367). The family-run ceramics business “El Qallaline,” founded in La Goulette in 1880 by Jacob Chemla, quickly prospered. From a simple little seaside workshop, it established itself as early as the 19th century as one of Tunisia’s most famous producers of earthenware.
