Pair of flintlock pistols. - Lot 116
Pair of flintlock pistols. Probably Kosovo, Prizren, late 18th to early 19th century. 53 cm for both. This pair of pistols is typical of those produced in Kosovo, likely in the city of Prizren, which at that time was a center for the production of high-quality weapons intended for the regional and European markets. Some anecdotes reported by travelers in the region, including Ami Boué, mention that the town’s children carry pistols at their belts starting at the age of twelve, and that men never part with their weapons, even at night. The decoration is elaborate, and part of the grip is covered with metal wires. A very similar pair of pistols, whose grips are also partially covered with vermeil wires, is reproduced in: Elgood, R. 2009, *The Arms of Greece and Her Balkan Neighbors in the Ottoman Period*, Thames and Hudson, ill. 246, 247, p. 191 (Visible oxidation and wear; one is missing a trigger guard)
