A COLLECTION OF PRAYERS INCLUDING SEVEN WORKS, AMONG THEM *D - Lot 80
A COLLECTION OF PRAYERS INCLUDING SEVEN WORKS, AMONG THEM *Dalāʾil al-Khayrāt* BY MUHAMMAD B. SULAYMAN AL-JAZULI (d. 1465 A. A.D.) AND *QASĪDAT AL-BURDADE* BY MUHAMMAD B. SAʿĪD AL-BŪSĪRĪ (d. 1294 A.D.) MOROCCO, 19TH CENTURY, SIGNED BY AHMAD B. MUHAMMAD B. AL-MAHDI B. MUHAMMAD AL-HALU A small devotional manuscript in Arabic on vellum, comprising 197 folios and 13 flyleaves. The illuminations are protected by red safflower-colored borders. Each leaf is written in 11 lines of small-modulus Maghribī script in black ink, with terms highlighted in red and blue. The work opens with a double-page spread of illuminations: on the right, a frontispiece divided into three cartouches, with floral vignettes in the margins—the central cartouche contains the beginning of the *Dalāʾil al-Khayrāt* inscribed in gold letters within a medallion with a blue background circled in red on a green background, while the upper and lower cartouches contain pious inscriptions in gold on a blue background; on the left, the text block is embellished with three floral vignettes in the margin. At the end of the first section are illuminated depictions of the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, featuring the tombs of the Prophet, Abū Bakr, and ʿUmar, as well as the mihrāb and the minbar. The section and work titles are inscribed in cartouches illuminated in gold and polychrome. A red colophon indicates the name of the scribe, Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. al-Mahdī b. Muḥammad al-Ḥalū. Original flap binding in garnet morocco leather stamped in gold, decorated with a central mandorla and floral spandrels, all within a frame of gilded sebka motifs; linings of decorated paper. List of texts: • Muhammad b. Sulayman al-Jazuli, *Dalāʾil al-Khayrāt* • Muhammad b. Saʿīd al-Būsīrī, *Qasīdat al-Burda* • Abu-l-Hasan al-Shadhili (d. 1258), *Hizb al-Kabiret* and *Hizb al-Bahr* • Abu Zakariyya al-Nawawi (d. 1277), *Hizb Abi Zakariyya* • Ahmad Zarruq (d. 1493), *Waẓīfa* • ʿAbd al-Salam b. Mashish (d. 1228), *Salat al-Mashishiyya* • Ibn al-Jazari (d. 1429), al-Hisn al-Hasin Folio dimensions: 11.5 × 11.5 cm; text area: 7 × 8 cm. The scribe likely belonged to the Awlād al-Ḥilū family, a group of Moroccan scribes and illuminators based in Fez who were active from the mid-18th century through the early 20th century (see Nabil Safwat, *Golden Pages: Qur’ans and Other Manuscripts from the Collection of Ghassan I. Shaker, 2000). Their manuscripts were renowned for their beauty, and some were commissioned by the Alawite sultans (see al-Mannūnī, *Tārīkh al-wirāqa al-maghribiyya*, 1991). Many of their copies are now preserved in heritage libraries, particularly in Morocco. Condition report: manuscript in very good condition
