DAWUD B. ʿUMAR AL-ANTAKI (d. 1008 H./1599 A.D.): KITAB TADHK - Lot 74
DAWUD B. ʿUMAR AL-ANTAKI (d. 1008 H./1599 A.D.): KITAB TADHKIRAT ULI AL-ALBAB WA-L-JAMIʿ LI-L-ʿAJAB AL-ʿUJAB, VOLUME TWO NORTH AFRICA, 18th–19th CENTURIES Arabic manuscript on laid paper with a watermark, comprising 273 folios, preceded and followed by 6 endpapers on vellum. The text, set within a frame formed of triple blue and red borders, is written in light black ink at a rate of 13 lines per page in neat Maghribi script, with the names of the ingredients highlighted in red or black and in a larger font. The recto of the first folio bears, in the center and in red, the title *al-juzʾ al-thani min al-kitab Tadhkirat uli al-albab wa-l-jamaʿ li-l-ʿajab al-ʿujab* as well as the author’s name, a ownership inscription in black ink in the upper left corner indicating that it belonged to the scholar ʿAbd Allah b. al-Qabil Ahmad. The volume covers the section from the letter khāʾ to the letter fā’, with marginal annotations in Arabic and a note in Latin. Closing formula at the end of the volume. Probably later flap binding in garnet-colored leather, with cold-stamped decoration featuring triple fillets forming a frame, a central mandorla highlighted by an axial gilded fillet, spandrels with gilded fleurons, and the interior of the covers lined with pink marbled paper. Dimensions of the leaves: 20 × 14.5 cm; dimensions of the text block: 12 × 8.5 cm. The kitāb *Tadhkirat ulī al-albāb wa-l-jāmiʿ li-l-ʿajab al-ʿujāb* (“A Reminder for Intelligent Men and a Collection of Wondrous Things”) is the medical and pharmacological treatise composed by Dāwūd b. ʿUmar al-Anṭākī (d. 1008 AH/1599 CE), who practiced in Antioch, Cairo, and Mecca. This work offers a systematic classification of remedies, their names, dosages, uses, and combinations, and follows in the tradition of Avicenna while developing a widely adopted clinical and pharmaceutical approach. Several Eastern manuscript copies exist in public collections (see the Bibliothèque nationale de France, with BNF Arabe 5756–8 and BNF Arabe 3031, 17th-century copies). In North Africa, a manuscript is housed in the Royal Library of Rabat (M. Sijelmassi, *Illuminations from the Royal Manuscripts of Morocco*, ACR, 1987, manuscript 89, p. 21). A few copies have also appeared at public auctions (Gros & Delettrez, December 13, 2004, lot 322). Condition report: Fair condition. The margins of the leaves are damaged by wormholes, particularly toward the end of the manuscript. The binding is in generally good condition, although the flap is nearly detached.
