FROM THE COLLECTION OF ARCHAEOLOGIST LIVINUS DE COESSEMAEKER - Lot 41
FROM THE COLLECTION OF ARCHAEOLOGIST LIVINUS DE COESSEMAEKER (1930–2014): ALABASTER JAR STAND, FATIMID EGYPT, 12TH CENTURY. Sculpted decoration consisting of a quadrangular basin resting on four curved feet and a rounded bowl; the sides are carved in relief with superimposed niches. The interior features an openwork arcade. 50 x 35.5 x 34 cm. PROVENANCE: Former collection of Livinus de Coessemaeker (1930–2014), archaeologist, Bruges (BE). Acquired by the current owners at auction: Rob Michels, Bruges, Belgium, June 28, 2021, lot 797. Fatimid and Ayyubid Egypt is the primary source of these jar stands, known as “kilga.” They were used to support large, unglazed terracotta jars. The catalog for the exhibition “Fatimid Treasures of Cairo” at the Arab World Institute in Paris, in 2001, lists two similar jar stands, preserved in Cairo, one of which is dated 550/1155 CE. A study on Egyptian jar stands was conducted by Elfriede R. Knauer and published in volume 14, pp. 67–101, of the Metropolitan Museum Journal in New York in 1979. See also the exhibition catalog *Fatimid Treasures from Cairo*, Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris, 2001: p. 180, nos. 126 and 127.
