Signed by Mir 'Ali, Central Asia, Bukhara, Safavid art, 16th-17th century Ink, gouache and gold on paper mounted on a cardboard album page. In the center, calligraphy in nasta'liq in clouds, in reserve on a cobalt blue background decorated with tchi clouds and foliage. Text extracted from the Mantiq al-Tayr of Farid al-Din 'Attar, located Dar al-Saltana Bukhara in the month of Sha'ban. The name Mir 'Ali is inscribed in the lower triangle, on a background decorated with scrolls. The border is decorated with golden scrolls and the margin is made up of green paper strips decorated with animals among trees. Condition: repaints, gold retouching, wear, tears, decoration of the signature triangle probably enriched or retouched. The calligrapher mentioned is certainly Mir 'Ali Haravi (Herat 1465-Bukhara 1544), cited as the most famous nasta'liq calligrapher of the first half of the 16th century. He worked in Khorassan at the court of the last Timurid sultan Husayn Bayqara (r.1470-1506) from whom he received the title "al-sultani", and then worked for the Turko-Mongol Chaybanids, in Mechhed and Bukhara. He wrote a treatise on nasta'liq calligraphy and composed many album pages. Many of his calligraphies are preserved in public collections. A calligraphy with an invocation to 'Ali (Nad-i Ali) attributed to Mir 'Ali Haravi is preserved in the Louvre Museum, Paris (inv. MAO 15 verso). Another album page signed Mir 'Ali Haravi is kept at the Freer Gallery of Art, Washington (inv. F1939.50b). Expert L.S.
