GOLD SEQUIN FRAGMENT, PURPLE SILK VELVET, PROBABLY TABRIZ, I - Lot 50
GOLD SEQUIN FRAGMENT, PURPLE SILK VELVET, PROBABLY TABRIZ, IL-KHANID ART, LATE 13th OR EARLY 14th CENTURY. Brocaded velvet, silk and gold thread. 47 x 30 cm. Provenance: uncatalogued public sale, Hôtel Drouot, ten years ago.
This fragment comes from a group of prestigious red velvets with a very distinctive decoration of gold discs, arranged in staggered rows. Another fragment from the same group, whose C14 dating test places it between AD 1299 and 1431, is published in: Francesca Galloway, Textile Splendours of the East, 24th June - 26th July 2019, p. 18, cat. 13. Other comparable fragments are preserved in museums, such as a slightly larger panel at the Metropolitan Museum in New York (46.156.72) and smaller fragments at the Cleveland Museum of Art (1918.30b).
