POLYLOBED CRUCIFORM PATTERN FRAGMENT, SAMITE SILK, CENTRAL ASIA, MID-13th CENTURY. Made of coral-red silk. Upholstered decoration of cruciform motifs embellished with palmettes and fleurons. Length: 49; Width: 36 cm.
Provenance: Private collection, Paris. Acquired on the Paris market some ten years ago.
A textile fragment with this motif, adorned with a calligraphic headband bearing the name of Sultan Salghur Abu Bakr b. Sa'd is preserved in the David Collection in Copenhagen, see Von Folsach, K., Art from the World of Islam in the David Collection, Copenhagen, 2001, no. 639 p. 374. And another fragment, with the same cruciform motif, embellished with birds, is published in the auction catalog: Piasa, Arts d'Orient - Orientalisme, 28/11/2002, lot 345.
