FRAGMENT OF A FATIMID TIRAZ. EGYPT, PROBABLY FATIMID DYNASTY, 11th-12th CENTURY Tapestry of polychrome silk threads on linen core, decorated with two bands of inscriptions in kufic Arabic in blue on a yellow background, chanting the word royalty, "al-mulk", framing a frieze of hexagons housing facing ducks. Framed under glass.
A fragment of a polychrome Fatimid tiraz with facing birds is in the Mteropolitan Museum, New York (inv. 31.106.66). Another very similar Fatimid fragment from the 12th century is in the Musée de Cluny (Cl. 22019), while another with a band of ducks passing between two inscribed bands is in the Victoria and Albert Museum (246-1890). Frame dimensions: 17 x 10.5 cm.
