GREEN-OLIVE SILK LAMPAS EMBROIDED IN GREY THREADS, FROM THE HOLY PLACES: THE INSIDE OF THE KA'ABA, 20th CENTURY. Rectangular form, woven in cream on an olive background with alternating calligraphic chevrons. 82.5 x 62 cm. Provenance: Acquired from Shaykh 'Umar Shaybi, keeper of the keys to Mecca. This type of textile was produced to decorate the sacred sanctuary of Mecca and Medina, covering the interior of the Ka'aba and the Prophet's tomb (al-Rawda al-Mutahhara).
