LARGE CORAN, IRAN, SAFAVID ART, DATED: 987 H./ 1579-80. Arabic manuscript on paper. 266 ff. and 2 ff. binding. 14 to 16 ll. per page, in fine naskh script, framed in gold, red and blue fillets. Gilt end-of-verse rosettes. Sura titles in gold thuluth. First double-page spread, with the text of the Fatiha on a gilded background, illuminated with poly-lobed cartouches on a cobalt-blue background, and on the verso the beginning of Sura al-Baqara, surmounted by an illuminated sarlowh. Bound in red morocco with flap and cover, decorated with stamped and gilded pendant medallions. Old restorations, wetness, a few tears, the first two folios rebound. 32.5 x 22 cm.
