RARE LEAF FROM A SMALL QUR'AN IN EASTERN KUFIC SCRIPT
IRAN OR IRAQ, ABBASSID ART, 11th-12th CENTURY
Sura Al-Hujarât (49): vv. 4-18 and Sura 'Qa (50): vv. 1-2. Black and red ink, gouache and gold on paper, 27 lines of Qur'anic text per page, inscribed in eastern kufic script, the end of the verses indicated by small gold roundels, diacritical marks in red, gold sura titles highlighted in blue, with gold and blue fleuron endings, a marginal medallion inscribed in kufic script indicating the ten verses.
18.3 x 12.9 cm.
This leaf comes from a rare Koran, due to its vertical format and paper support. Five other leaves from this same Koran are listed: two are in the Library of Congress, African and Middle Eastern Division, Washington (1-89-154.177ab); one is in the Detroit Institute of Art (no.25.81.B) and two others in the Brown University Library, Providence (no.A983, manuscript 39, folio 2).
