Yatagan (sabre) et son fourreau recouvert d'argent, Signé par Hasan, Empire ottoman, datée : 1823-24
Sword with slightly curved blade, with a thin gutter, in steel inlaid with gold, one side of the blade decorated with inscriptions in cartouches, on a background of scrolls and palmettes, the other side with the same scroll and palmette pattern. The pommel is made of walrus ivory (,Odobenur rosmarus, Annex-B, preconvention) with a steel guard inlaid with gold. Wooden scabbard covered in silver, the cap with ringed decoration of braids and granulated bands, the body with repoussé work, with a pattern of grids of flowers, alternating with interlaced poly-lobed cartouches, furnished with bouquets and flowering vases. The inscription: سوره انا فتحنانی اقو لیل و نهار سرتاسراغدالرک اولسون ذلیل و خاکسار عون حقله بو بجاقدن اوله لرهن تارمباد؟ اول محب خاندان اهل بیت چار بار عمل حسن صاحب عابولف ۱۲۳۹ Total length : 78 cm Four hemistiches of an Ottoman Turkish poem in quatrain or rubâî form, in which the first, second and fourth hemistiches have the same rhyme. Naskhi script. The signature of the sword maker, Hasan, and the owner, Abulotf, and the date, 1823-24, in a cartouche before the quatrain. The quatrain asks to read Surah al-Fath (48) or Victory Day and Night, so that the enemies become weak and defenseless, and die by this sword, with the help of God. A very similar yatagan was sold at Millon et Associés, Arts d'Orient et de l'Inde, 8 December 2021, lot 218.
