Partie d'un brûle-parfum
Egypt or Syria, Mamluk art, 14th-15th century Of hemispherical form, with small holes, in engraved brass inlaid with silver, decorated in the center with three hares whose ears merge, framed by eight-pointed stars whose tips contain lotus flowers. H 4 ; diam. 7,5 cm Centrifugal" animal compositions (or animal "wheels") appear in Islamic metalwork around the 12th century. They developed in Syria from the beginning of the 13th century. The history of this motif is traced by the objects published in Baer, Metalwork in Medieval Islamic Art, State University of New York, New York, 1983, pp. 172-175. Compositions of hares similar to ours can be seen there. A perfume burner decorated with lotuses can also be found in the Correr Museum in Venice (Inv. CL XII n. 0009). Another one of a similar style was sold at Christie's in London, October 5, 2010, lot 156.
