Turkey, Ottoman art, 18th century and later; modern margins Album (muraqqa') in Italianate format opening at the top, consisting of forty composite panels, each formed of three or four strips of text in thuluth and naskh script, cut out and pasted one under the other. The text is in black ink on beige and light green paper and contains calligraphic exercises (mufradat and murakkabat), Arabic prayers, parts of the poem Qasidat al-Burda by Ka'b ibn Zuhayr and the Qasidat al-Burda by al-Busiri. The last panel contains a colophon signed al-Sayyid Muhammad (Seyyid Mehmed) known as Nuri, dated AH 1160 / AD 1747-48. The panels, probably from several manuscripts and several hands, were later mounted on new pages in a frame of marbled paper and gilt lines, on cardboard pages decorated with marbled "ebru" paper. Calligraphies of variable sizes, some about 10 x 18 cm; album: 24 x 33 cm Seyyid Mehmed Nuri, the calligrapher mentioned on the last page, born in Jerusalem, is also known as Misri (Egyptian) because he lived in Cairo when he was young. After moving to Istanbul, he was appointed as a palace teacher by Sultan Mahmud I. He then lost this position and returned to Egypt where he continued to teach. He died in 1162 AH /1749-50 (Müstakimzade Süleyman Sadeddin, Tuhfe-i Hattâtîn, Istanbul, 1928, pp. 490-491). The panels are composite, some lines are truncated at the ends, and some letters are completed in black ink. The marbled papers, margins and bindings are later. Some marbled paper margins are composed of different sheets of paper. Expert L.S.
