MAHARAJA SUR UNE TERRASSE ACCOMPAGNÉ DE SES SUIVANTES - Lot 171
MAHARAJA SUR UNE TERRASSE ACCOMPAGNÉ DE SES SUIVANTES INDIA, RAJASHAN, JODHPUR, CA. 1800-30 Gouache and gold on cardboard page, depicting a young, beardless maharaja, seated on a throne on a terrace, before four seated female musicians. Three courtesans stand behind him, one in the foreground with a shield and fan, another with a box, and the third with a fly swatter, wear, stains and wetness. A GOUACHE AND GOLD ON PAPER INDIAN MINIATURE DEPICTING A MAHARAJA ON A TERRASSE WITH SERVANTS, INDIA, RASTHAN, JODHPUR, CIRCA 1800-1820. Size : 21 x 27,3 cm. This representation of a young maharaja is most probably that of Man Singh, Maharajah of the kingdom of Marwar and the state of Jodhpur, born in 1783 (r. 1803-17 and 1818-43). Indeed, this portrait depicts a beardless ruler, wearing a turban characteristic of Jodhpur, and Man Singh acceded to the throne at the age of twenty. Although he is most often depicted with a beard, another portrait depicting him as beardless and dated circa 1830, went on public sale at Bonhams in San Francisco on 18 December 2017, lot 842.
