A GOLD ON BLUE PAPER HILYAH, COMBINED WITH THE RELICS OF THE PROPHET, TURKEY, OTTOMAN, 19TH CENTURY. H: 40.5 x W: 24.5 cm The text contains an Ḥilyah (ḥilah-yi sharîf) detailing the twelve relics (shamâʾil) of the Prophet, which are filled with Qur'anic verses and sacred texts. The Prophet Muḥammad was commemorated in Ottoman Turkey by the Ḥilyah. The present calligraphic piece combines the full version of the Ḥilyah according to Imam ʿAlî (center of the image) which describes the physical attributes of the Prophet Muḥammad, including his scissors, walking stick, sword, and cloak (left); his signet ring, banner, and miswâk (right); and his ablution ewer, sandals, seal, boots, and rosary (below).
