MURAQQA À LA TULIPE, EXERCICES DE CALLIGRAPHIE TURKEY, OTTOMAN ART, 1867-69; MODERN MARGINS Album (murakkaa) in Italian format of fourteen calligraphic exercises in black ink on paper, each composed of two lines in thuluth script of single and linked letters (mufradat and murakkabat) framing two thin lines in naskh, mounted on cardboard with margins of paper speckled in brick red and gold on a beige background. The text begins with a prayer in Arabic. Some pages are dated from 17 Safar 1284 (20 June 1867) to 10 Sha'ban 1286 (15 November 1869). At the bottom of the last page, an apocryphal inscription in red has been pasted on giving the name of the calligrapher Hafiz Yusuf Efendi (d. 1787). Both binding covers decorated with a marbled paper tulip "ebru". Later margins and binding, enclosed in thin tan leather bands.
