OTTOMAN SHIELD (KALKAN) OTTOMAN EMPIRE, 17th-18th CENTURY Characteristically shaped, the body is formed of a tightly wound, slightly domed spiral cane, with each ring wrapped in colored thread. In an applied studded steel frame and rim joined by forged bands. The handle is attached to the reverse, covered in period fabric. Diameter: 28 cm Popular in the eastern Ottoman Empire, where these shields were used in conjunction with sabers and daggers.
