MAMELUKE LUNCH BOX EGYPT, late 15th-early 16th CENTURY Oval tin-plated copper with domed lid, hollow ring-shaped handle and clasp. Chased decoration of cartouche friezes inscribed with thuluth or geometric motifs framing medallions with entangled geometric motifs. Brown and green patina, lined with red velvet. Length: 21 cm - Height: 15 cm Former private collection. Acquired by the current owner at the estate sale by Lisieux Enchères, March 26, 2016, lot 172. This box is similar to a group of "cantines" in the Arab Museum in Cairo, dated between the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Cf. Gaston WIet, catalog du Musée Arabe, Objets en cuivre, 1932, pls.
