EGYPT, late 15th-early 16th CENTURY
Oval tin-plated copper with domed lid, hollow ring-shaped handle and clasp. Chased decoration of cartouche friezes inscribed with thuluth or geometric motifs framing medallions with entangled geometric motifs. Brown and green patina, lined with red velvet.

Acquired by the current owner at the estate sale by Lisieux Enchères, March 26, 2016, lot 172.
This box is similar to a group of "cantines" in the Arab Museum in Cairo, dated between the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Cf. Gaston WIet, catalog du Musée Arabe, Objets en cuivre, 1932, pls. LXVI to LXXI.
