In a stiff blue-gray binding, the spine inscribed with the title and volume numbers in gold in the entre nerf. Text in Ottoman Turkish. Various printing dates. Wear, titles and volume numbers on spine partially worn. Private collection, Northern France. Another edition is held by the Bibliothèque nationale de France (ark:/12148/cb146073488.public). The author was an Ottoman historian, jurist and statesman. Ahmed Cevdet Pasha (March 22, 1822-May 25, 1895) was an Ottoman scholar, intellectual, civil servant, administrator and historian who played an important role in the reforms of the Tanzimat period of the Ottoman Empire. As head of the Mecelle Commission, he codified Islamic law for the first time in response to the modernization of the law.
