ALMANACH (RUZNAMEH) COPIÉ PAR AL-ARIF MUHAMMAD AMIN AL-HILMI TURKEY, OTTOMAN ART, 19th CENTURY Ink, polychrome pigments and gold on vellum, eggplant leather and wood. Dimensions: 107 x 9 cm. Private collection, Versailles. These calendars were produced in Ottoman Turkey from the 17th century onwards. They varied in length but were generally small and pocket-sized. Almanacs are generally associated with Darendeli Mehmed Effendi, who created an almanac for Istanbul. Three similar Ruznamas are preserved in the collection of Nasser D. Khalili, see J.M. Rogers, Empire of the Sultans, London, 1996, pp. 118-120, nos. 70-72.
