The movement signed Johannes Benner, Aug, Germany, Augsburg, circa 1650. Made for a high dignitary of the Ottoman court In gilt brass, of square form resting on four ball feet, the dial engraved with Turkish numerals, with spandrels with floral motifs, the four faces decorated with lobed cartouches enamelled in lapis blue, inscribed with four verses (eight hemistiches) of a qasîdah in Ottoman Turkish, on a background of gilded foliage. The plate with floral decoration cut, openwork and finely engraved, signature "Johannes Benner Aug. Condition: The movement at a standstill, no guarantee of functioning, the gilding worn on the upper side, chips to the enamels. Inscription: کل ساعت صان امر اولدی فلکده مهر رخشانه دقیقه بر دقیقه خدمت سلطان ذی شانه؟ کل عقرب کورین بر نهنگ هفت سر درکیم شناور لک ایدرنجه نجومده شاه دورانه کورونجه التفاتن پادشاه عالم ارانک او ساعتده صدا سی مه؟ گتدی ملک خاورستانه خدا حفظ ایلسون دائم کل رخسار سلطانی همیشه بندگانن غرق ایدر دریای احسانه The Ottoman inscription refers to the clock itself, and to its royal quality. The king's name is not mentioned, but the inscription uses the metaphorical meaning of the astral elements, and the hours and minutes, to evoke their service to the ruler. The poem ends with a tribute to the sultan, whose subjects are drowning in the sea of his generosity. 12.3 x 12.2 x 9.5 cm Southern Germany was an important center of clock production in the 17th century. Johannes Benner was a clockmaker active in Augsburg, Germany, between about 1650 and 1680. Five other square clocks of his manufacture have been identified. They have transparent panels on the side, inviting to see the fineness of the mechanism. One of them has for example been sold at Sotheby's, Furniture sale, 2 November 2011, London, lot 29. Another clock with blue decorative panels was sold at Sotheby's, Important Watches, Wristwatches and Clocks, London, 2003, lot 103. This one is signed by another clockmaker, Georg Braun, also active in Augsburg in the second half of the 17th century. For more information see the description in the PDF of the catalog.
