Calebasse gravée au décor architectural
Ottoman Empire, circa 1876, attributed to the artist Hamouda Ben Elhaj (active in Algeria) Of double gourd form, engraved and lacquered, decorated with a stylized architectural decoration of an Ottoman port city, probably Istanbul. H 18,5 ; diam. 10 cm A gourd very similar to ours is published on the ALJ Antiques website (n°122). Thanks to its resemblance to a cane briefcase signed Hamouda Ben Elhaj (ALJ Antiques n°123), it is attributed to the same Algerian artisan engraver. The style of drawing and the monuments represented are indeed identical. This briefcase is dated 1876, the year in which the sculptor won a medal in an "agricultural exhibition" in Algiers. An earlier gourd (17th century), with a more refined decoration of tulips, carnations and Ottoman poetry, is preserved in the State Museum of Baden in Karlsruhe (Petrasch, Die Karlsruher Türkenbeute, Hirmer, Munich, 1991, p 298).
