Rare fourreau de poignard en jade incrusté á l'or
Turkey, Ottoman art, 16th-17th century; later mounts Engraved decoration inlaid with gold, decorated with scrolls of palmettes and small gold discs, the other side decorated with leafy scrolls, punctuated with roundels, originally housing cabochons, the gold almost disappeared, the later gilded mounts. Length : 18 cm Several jade objects from the 16th/17th century Ottoman period are in public and private collections. However, jade scabbards from this period remain very rare. Only one other sixteenth-century jade scabbard, with a technique and decoration identical to ours, is preserved in the collection of the Museo di Mineralogia e Litologia (inv. n. 13662), published in: Giovanni Curatola, Mirath al-Islam, Eridità dell'Islam, Arte islamica in Italia, Silvia Editoriale, 1993, cat. 294, ill. 294b, p. 451. The gold decoration inlaid on this scabbard is very distinctive. It is characteristic of a group of objects identified as Ottoman, dating from the sixteenth century and sometimes the seventeenth century. This decoration is distinguished by small gold discs punctuating very pure and supple palmettes scrolls, but also and above all by the smooth surface of the gold, blending with the surface of the jade, offering a very comfortable touch and a very elegant appearance. We have been able to identify several of these objects, see for example: - An Ottoman jade plate, dating from the 17th century, is in Copenhagen, David Collection, published in: Kjeld von Folsach, Art from the World of Islam in The David Collection, cat. 382, p. 241. - An Ottoman jade archer's ring with identical decoration, dating from the late sixteenth-early seventeenth century, is held in New York at the Metropolitan Museum (acc. 36.25.2807), see: David G.
