Grande boussole et indicateur de qibla
Turkey, Ottoman art, 19th century Rectangular wooden box painted in green with gilded decoration of a crescent moon and vegetal border. The inside of the lid is decorated with a view of Mecca in an oval medallion with floral bouquets in the spandrels. The interior of the box contains a compass with a metal needle, with a representation of the Ka'bah, surrounded by thirty-two divisions of 11.25° containing the names of the quarter winds and half winds written in Ottoman Turkish, with the position of the qibla indicated at the bottom, from which a string connected to the lid is hung, indicating the direction of the qibla. Representation of Medina in an oval archway on a background of floral motifs. Condition: worn. Expert L.S. 26 x 17.3 cm ; H. : 5.3 cm
