Iran, Qajar art, mid-19th century Made of papier-mâché and lacquered, with a sliding compartment, the top decorated with multi-lobed medallions, organized vertically, with the bust of Saint John the Baptist, in a European style, hands joined is in the middle of two other medallions representing the Armenian church of Julfa, in the vicinity of Isfahan in Iran, the whole decorated with gilded registers of garlands. 22.5 x 3.5 x 4 cm Another pen box with an almost identical decoration to ours, signed Najaf 'Ali, dated 1853-4 is in the Khalili Collection, published in: Khalili, Robinson, Stanley, Lacquer of the Islamic Lands, Part Two, 1997, pp. 22-9 and cat. no. 234. Another with very similar decoration, including the spandrels around the medallions, and the central figure, is in the British Museum (acc. 1964.1218.3).
