India, probably southern India, 18th-19th century In brass, resting on a quadrangular base, embellished with a necklace (normally with a bell), a strap around the tail, connected to a central part, probably the Shiva mount, missing. H. 9.5 ; L. 9 ; W. 4.5 cm Nandi, also known as Nandikeshwara or Nandideva, is the vahana of the Hindu god Shiva. He is also the deity guarding Kailash, the abode of Shiva. Almost all Shiva temples have stone representations of a seated Nandi, usually facing the main shrine.
