Coffret en laiton gravé
India, 19th century Of octagonal form resting on four feet, with a lid topped by a grip point, fitted with a clasp and two hinges, in brass engraved with checkerboard patterns and stylized rosettes, alternating on the vertical sides, framed by friezes with geometric decoration, the lid with similar ornamentation to which is added a leaf motif. 15 x 11 x 15 cm With the exception of pandans (betel boxes), few metal boxes from the Mughal period have come down to us. Ours was probably used for jewelry, coins or other valuables (Zebrowski, Gold Silver & Bronze from Mughal India, Alexandria Press, London, 1997, p280). The stylized vegetal decoration associated with geometric motifs has many similarities with the typical motifs of the Swat Valley (present-day Pakistan) (Johannes Kalter, The arts and crafts of the Swat Valley, Thames and Hudson, London, 1991, p 133 and following).
