Page size: 24 x 17 cm; painting size: 20.5 x 14 cm The Gita-Govinda ("Song of the Cowherd") is one of the most famous lyrical poems in Sanskrit literature, written by Jayadeva in the 12th century, which celebrates the love affair of the cowherd Krishna and Radha, one of the gopis (cowherds) with whom he falls in love. In this episode, Krishna dances with the gopas (cowherds). The "rasa-lila" is a dance in the traditional story of Krishna where he is dancing with the gopis, or gopas, attracted by the sound of his flute.
