Calligraphie montée sur une page d'album (Qit'a) : Sa'adi et Amir Shahi,
Attributed to Sultan Muhammad Khandan, Herat, Safavid art, 16th century Ink, gouache and gold on paper, mounted on a cardboard album page. The central panel is composed of an assemblage divided into three vertical registers, inscribed in nasta'liq on a background of flowers. At the bottom of the central panel appears the very faded name: Sultan Muhammad Khandan and at the top left "katabahu al-'abd Muhammad". Around it, bands of salmon paper forming a wide margin. Condition: wear, stains and folds. H. 38.5 cm; W: 25.8 cm; Central panel: 25 x 16.5 cm This page is attributed to Sultan Muhammad Khandan, a famous nasta'liq calligrapher, student of Sultan 'Ali Mashhadi, who worked in Herat and began his career under the patronage of Mir 'Alishir Nava'i. Many calligraphies attributed to him are dated between 1510 and 1585. The signature has probably been re-inscribed during a restoration, nevertheless, the style of calligraphy corresponds well to Khandan's style. Expert L.S.
