Calligraphie montée en page d'album : Versets du Gulistan de Sa'adi
Signed Mir 'Ali, Central Asia, Safavid art, 16th century Ink, gouache and gold on paper mounted on a modern cardboard page. The central panel is inscribed in nasta'liq with nine diagonal lines of text in reserve in clouds on a gilded background decorated with flowers. The last line gives the name "faqir Mir 'Ali", (the humble Mir 'Ali). A long thuluth band runs along the right side and three other cartouches border the whole. Small panels of Chinese tchi clouds. H.: 39.5 cm; W: 25.6 cm The calligrapher mentioned is certainly Mir 'Ali Haravi (Herat 1465-Bukhara 1544), often mentioned as the most famous nasta'liq calligrapher of the first half of the 16th century. He worked in Khorassan at the court of the last Timurid sultan Husayn Bayqara (r.1470-1506) from whom he received the title "al-sultani", and then worked for the Turko-Mongol Chaybanids, in Mechhed and Bukhara. He wrote a treatise on nasta'liq calligraphy and composed many album pages. Many of his calligraphies are preserved in public collections. A calligraphy with an invocation to 'Ali (Nad-i Ali) attributed to Mir 'Ali Haravi is preserved in the Louvre Museum, Paris (inv. MAO 15 verso). Another album page signed Mir 'Ali Haravi is kept at the Freer Gallery of Art, Washington (inv. F1939.50b). Expert L.S.
