Petite lampe à décor épigraphié émaillé
Europe, probably Paris, France, second half of the 19th century Colorless glass lamp with bulbous body provided with three handles of suspension, high flared neck and small pedestal. Decorated with enamelled registers in cobalt blue, white, gold, with highlights of yellow, green and red, decorated with two bands of inscriptions in the Mamluk style, in white on the body and blue on the neck. Interior slightly iridescent. H. 14.5 cm ; Diameter : 8 cm This suspension lamp takes the form and decoration of Mamluk mosque lamps with enamel decoration, from Egypt or Syria of the 13th-15th centuries. Its vivid decoration and its friezes of small dots are characteristic of the production of Venice, which extends from the end of the 15th-beginning of the 16th century until the 19th century. An exhibition recently held at the National Museum of the Renaissance, Château d'Ecouen, has allowed for the scientific study and analysis of Venetian glass and its later copies. See the exhibition catalog Venice and the Orient 828-1797, Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris, 2006, cat. 164 and 166, pp. 266-67 for examples from the Renaissance; and the catalog Emailler le Verre à la Renaissance. Sur les traces des artistes verriers entre Venise et France, Château d'Ecouen, 2021, cat. 51-60, pp. 136-151 for later copies whose enamels proved to be incompatible with Venetian Renaissance recipes.
