CALLIGRAPHIE ZOOMORPHE AU LION INSCRITE DE NIDA 'ALI
IRAN, 20th CENTURY Gouache and gold on paper, mounted on a cardboard page, depicting a calligraphic inscription forming a lion, the letters of which are decorated with flowering stems on a black background. The text includes the prayer "Nadi 'Ali", wetness on the upper part; A ZOOMORPHIC CALLIGRAPHIC ALBUM PAGE, PERSIA, 20TH CENTURY. Page size: 23 x 38 cm; margins: 27.5 x 38.7 cm. This zoomorphic calligraphy is based on the model of a lion, probably dating from the 16th century, which was frequently copied in Iran in the 19th century and later, and of which an identical example, painted in gilt, is currently in the Asian Civilisations Museum in Singapore (inv. no. 1996-00019). The text is a reference to the prayer known as 'Nadi 'Ali', and the lion refers to Ali's nickname, 'the lion of Allah', a form in which he is often depicted. Expert L.S.
