PICHET AU BANDEAU COUFIQUE ORNEMENTAL
EASTERN IRAN OR TRANSOXIAN, NICHAPOUR OR SAMARCANDE, 10th CENTURY
Pitcher with a bulbous body on a small heel and a high, slightly flared neck, fitted with a straight handle, made of clay ceramic decorated with brown slip over beige slip, decorated with a continuous band of epigraphic Arabic inscription in braided Kufic with flowers. Three high fleurons punctuate the neck.

A very similar jug in the Metropolitan Museum, New York, is decorated with the same fleurons and a band inscribed with a similar woven Kufic Arabic proverb (inv. no. 1988.114.3).
The inscription reads: al-ikhlassu yuhassinu al-a'mâl (devotion strengthens actions).
An almost identical jug in the Metropolitan Museum in New York is decorated with the same fleurons and the same band with a similar Arabic proverb in braided kufic script (inv. no. 1988.114.3).
