CORAN DANS SA SACOCHE DE CUIR - Lot 103
CORAN DANS SA SACOCHE DE CUIR SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA, CHAD, FIRST HALF OF THE 20th CENTURY A complete Qur'an of Chadian type in presentation and writing, slightly smaller than the usual copies. The 524 leaves are 18 cm long and 14 lines per page, unbound and stacked on top of each other, in a leather envelope with strap. The hard leather case is decorated with two leather discs representing two eyes charged with protecting the work from the evil eye ('ayn) l and evil spirits. The writing on Italian laid paper is done with a local ink of brown for the ductus and dark red for the vocalisation, the titles of the suras and the small markers separating the verses. Signs of incompleteness are visible in various parts of the manuscript: missing vocalisation, colouring of figures, verse markers and marginal figures of the fractions of hizb. In addition, the work of several different copyists can be noted. Simple geometric decorations (rectangles, squares) mark the four quarters of the Qur'an, but some are not coloured. Size of the pages: 17.5 x 11.3 cm. Leather cover: 19 x 14 x 9 cm. Bag: 20.5 x 16 x 12 cm. A QURAN WITH LEATHER COVER AND ITS BOX, SUBSAHARIAN, CHAD, FIRST HALF 20TH CENTURY We thank : Mr Constant Hamès, Doctor of Anthropology (Muslim world), for his contribution to the identification and description of this manuscript. The bag and the leaves do not bear any marks of use.
